Anglers Quest 2008 Sam Rayburn Saturday Series #5 out of Mill Creek Park in Brookeland, TX began this event with 70 teamed anglers showing up to fish for the $3670.00 purse. The event began at safe light, which was 6:10 am. Weigh in was conducted in 2 flights at 3:15 & 3:30 pm. This Rayburn Saturday Series after all 9 events will provide the Team Anglers of the year with free entries to all 2009 Rayburn Saturday Series events. The Top 25 teams in pounds will qualify for the 2-day Championship in October on Sam Rayburn. A special Top 5 group of teams will qualify to go to the "Tournament of Champions" to be held in November on Choke Canyon Reservoir and will pay the winning team $15,000.00. All Anglers Quest Championships include Calcutta auctions which builds the Championship purse to some very nice $$ to fish for, for a very small entry fee of $125.00 per team.
Sam Rayburn water was in good shape and about normal pool level with water temps running 67-70 degrees. The weather at takeoff was a breezy 64 degrees with a warming to 83 degrees by weigh in time. The fish catching was decent on Big Sam today as there were only 16 limits brought to the scales, for a total of 116 bass at 264.19 lbs making the average bass brought to the scales today weigh 2.27 lb.
The team of William Perego & Wes Moody from Kirbyville, Tx ran William’s Skeeter/Mercury to south lake areas to probe 5 ft depths around creek channel edges and bushes with tx rigged brush hogs & 10" worms to bring 5 nice bass to the scales that weighed 17.34 lbs to capture 1st place and collect $1225.00 for their day on the water.
The team of Jack Carroll & Roy Carroway from Lufkin, Tx ran Jack’s Skeeter/Yamaha to mid lake areas to bring to the scales 5 nice bass that weighed 17.30 lbs to capture 2nd place which allowed them to collect $600.00 for their day on the water.
Griff Griffith from Huffman & Mike Matheson from Humble, Tx ran Griff’s Sprint/Mercury bass rig to mid lake ledges with grass to fish c-rigged worms in 6-8 ft water to finish in 3rd place with 15.55 lbs. Griff & Mike had the Big Bass of the event, a fine 7.34 lber and took home $605.00 for their day on the water.
The current AOY leaders Matt Purghan from Orange & Ross Smith from Bridge City, Tx ran their BassCat/Mercury bass rig to north lake areas and brought in 5 bass at 13.95 lbs to garner 4th place. Their efforts payed back $355.00 for the day.
Greg Crawford from Huffman & Tommy Bankhead from Crosby, Tx ran Greg’s Champion/Mercury bass rig to north lake areas with grass clumps in 5-8 ft water throwing c-rigs and brought in 5 bass at 13.05 lbs to garner 5th place and collect the 5th place check of $225.00.
The 6th place check of $185.00 was gathered up by Tommy Hill from Kountze & Kenneth Conkle from Port Neches, Tx with 5 bass at 11.82 lbs. Elton Thomae gathered the last money spot of $150.00 with 5 bass that tipped the scales at 11.24 lbs.
Anglers Quest will be at The Ponderosa Marina on Lake Houston on Tuesday evenings & Wednesday evenings at The Marina Shell on Lake Conroe for the weekly series events through September. On May 10th A/Q will be at Kickapoo Bait & Tackle on Lake Livingston for the 6th of 9 Livingston Saturday Series events. On May 17th A/Q will be at Alpine Marina on Toledo Bend for the 5th of 9 Toledo Bend Saturday Series events. A/Q will be back on Big Sam on May 25th for the 5th of 7 Super Team events.
