Study indicates significantly more red snapper in the Gulf than previously estimated
(Oct 4, 2020 - Alexandria, VA) Yesterday, Congress was briefed on the impressive preliminary findings of the Great Red Snapper Count. This unprecedented study was led by the Harte Research Institute and provides an independent and robust assessment of Gulf of Mexico red snapper stock abundance. According to a NOAA Fisheries statement on the study, the results indicate there are “up to three times as many” red snapper in the Gulf than previously thought.

(Oct 1, 2020 - Alexandria, VA) Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed without objection H.R. 5126, the Direct Enhancement of Snapper Conservation and the Economy through Novel Devices Act of 2020 (DESCEND Act). The bill requires recreational (including charter boats) and commercial fishermen to have on board a venting tool or descending device that is rigged and ready for use while fishing for reef fish in Gulf of Mexico federal waters.
