(May. 18, 2004 - Morristown, TN)
Saturday, May 15, was the 5th Annual Kid's Hooked on Fishing Day Camp sponsored by Anglers for Christ Ministries. This event, held in Morristown, TN each year in the month of May gets larger each year. This year there were around 275 children involved in the event.
The morning began with a welcome by AFC Ministries Director Tony Sellars. Also following on the program were officers from the Morristown Police Dept, Hamblen Co. Sheriffs Dept. & the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency along with Ronnie Smith, Children's Pastor of Manley Baptist Church. The children were taught the values of good morals, staying away from drinking & drugs and staying in school and studying hard. One of the highlights of the program was a visit from ministry mascot "Catfish", a silly, snaggeled tooth tiger dressed out in his Triton shirt. At the end of the program, Rod Garrett, Vice-President of AFC Ministries brought a simple children's sermon. At the end an invitation was given and 64 gave their hearts to the Lord. Seven of those being adults.
AFC Ministries conducts seven to eight of these camps across the country each year. At each camp besides the opening program, each child is given a prize bag and is able to complete for winning prizes in each age group. The prizes consists of rod & reel combos, tackle boxes, plaques and lots of tackle. The camps began in 1999 in hopes of teaching children a new skill or hobby that might keep them out of trouble later on in life. If a child is taught to hunt or fish chances are very good that they will stay clean throughout their lives. The big winners Saturday were- 6 and under- Sydney Bacon, age 7-10- Casey Smith, age 11-13- April Taylor, and age 14-18- Jacob Mills. The big fish of the day was a catfish weighing 4 lb. 4 oz. caught by Hunter Harrell. The casting winner was Noah Cody of Morristown.
