South Florida Man Wins Marathon International Bonefish Tournament

(Oct. 01, 2012 - MARATHON, Florida Keys)

Pat Bennett of Weston, Fla., was named champion of the Marathon International Bonefish Tournament that ended Sept. 23.

Bennett, a multi-year veteran of the lighthearted three-day challenge, teamed up with guide Tim Carlile of Sugarloaf Key, Fla. The pair released 14 fish including the tournament's only permit.

Jim Smith of Big Pine Key, Fla., earned the award for largest bonefish on fly with an 18-inch fish.

Sheila Eckert of Summerland Key, Fla., won the ladies division with five bonefish as an unguided angler.

In keeping with a Marathon International Bonefish Tournament tradition, the traveler's award was given to the angler who traveled the farthest distance to fish. That award went to Linda Cook of Rowley, Mass.

The competition's eight anglers released a total of 43 bonefish.
