A Boat Named Boo

“Well, what do you think I should name her, Debra solicited, while standing there in the crisp air of a new day gazing at the sleek ’07 model of her new Skeeter bass boat. Pal maybe,.. How about Buddy or Vixen, or why not Boo? Boo immediately generated flash-back recall of an “Oldy-Goldy” pop tune about a minstrel touring the country with a dog named “BOO”. So be it……… Welcome Boo!

-(Sung to Lobo’s “You and me and a dog named Boo)-

“I remember to this day the bright red Georgia clay …

How it stuck to the tires after the summer rain …

Will power made that old car go,

A woman’s mind told me that’s so …”

Oh how I wish we were back on the road again” For professional bass anglers, such as Debra Hengst, the tools of their trade become very important items for enhancing their careers. Fishing rods, reels, tackle, clothing, and most importantly, bass-boats, are all in the mix for creating positive images of their profession.

“Me and you and a boat named Boo …Travelin’ and a livin’ on the run …”

“Me and you and a boat named Boo …How I love being a bassin’ woman …”

Touring the country meeting the challenges of their trade the symbolic image of touring WBT professional’s rides on axles behind hitched vehicles. The Bass Boat, a key image of a bass/pro, becomes the first impression of public notice while traveling to and from the obligations of their chosen sport. Often than not these bass-rigs will have eye catching sponsorship wraps embracing their boats with logos and icons emblazoned on their sides announcing the who, where, and what’s of their profession.

“I can still recall the wheat fields of Saint Paul

And the morning we got caught robbing from an old hen,

Old McDonald, he made us work,

but then he paid us for what it was worth,

Another tank of gas and back on the road again”

“I’ve fished my way through several boats now, Debra reminisced while lovingly rubbing the gunnel of her latest Skeeter-rig, and all have been very good to me. I remember ‘Lucky’ my ’04 boat, so named after almost having a serious accident when a huge buck deer unexpectedly leaped out in front of me, causing me to run off the road. But ‘God’ was my co-pilot during that very frightful experience and safely guided me back to the living. I feel the Lord had a purpose for saving my life and I plan to repay that gift.

Then there’s ‘Lucky II’ my â06 boat, that took me through my first tournament trail with the Woman’s BASSMaster Tour, touring such states as Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, and Arkansas. Lucky II was also my first Skeeter and Strike King sponsored wrapped boat after being invited to join the Strike King and Skeeter Bass Boat National Teams. Now, preparing for my 2007 WBT tour, Debra proudly announced, Skeeter has provided me with their new ’07 model bass boat to accompany me on those long road trips touring the country and “chasing the dream” of qualifying for the WBT World Championship.

“I’ll never forget the day we motored stately into big L.A.

The lights of the city put settlin’ down in my brain

Though it’s only been a month or so,

that old car’s buggin’ us to go,

We gotta get away and get back on the road again”

Debra Hengst’s new rig, a Skeeter/Yamaha HPDI- ZX225, is a sleek, fully rigged 20′- 2″ long by 100″ abeam 1,700 lb 225 horse powered ‘pond-rocket’ that will definitely get her where she needs to go on the water. Deep, dry storage lockers abound for stowing all her fishing tools and technical needs while competing in the highly contested WBT events. “I’m really proud of this Skeeter/Yamaha ZX225, Debra praised, and I feel that it’s the right tool, at the right time, with the right stuff!”
