A-Salt Weapon Catches the Win at Islamorada Dolphin Tournament

Team A-Salt Weapon took first place and the $5,000 first prize at the fifth annual Islamorada Dolphin Tournament that ended July 14 at Smuggler’s Cove Marina.

Teammates and Miami residents Captain Michael Vera, Benito Vera, Carlos Padron and Jason Smith weighed in three dorado totaling 90.2 pounds for the win.

Placing second, with a combined weight of 85.7 pounds of dolphin fish, was team Playbaby. Tavernier, Fla., residents Captain Benny Spaulding and anglers Benjamin Spaulding Jr. and Jonathan Fordham took home a $2,500 prize.

The event’s largest fish, a 37.1-pounder, was captured by team Yank ‘Em. It also qualified as the largest fish in the outboard division, earning the team $2,000.

A field of 55 anglers participated in the two-day tournament whose rules mandate that only two fish can be weighed each day, yet three are required to win.
