Hi I’m Mark Menendez, Yamaha Pro. Top water fishing can be the most exciting fishing that we have in bass fishing. Some of my favorite baits are the Pop’r, as well as the Zara Spook. The Zara Spook is a bait I use a lot in the post spawn period when the fish are just leaving the spawning areas. This bait tends to catch a larger quantity of fish, you make a long cast out there, you get your rod tip down, making the bait walk side to side. This is called “walking the dog”. In this rhythmic type situation, the big fish will come long distances to get it. It is also a very, very good smallmouth bait.
With a Pop’r, I like to fish in very tight to cover, keep it in the strike zone as long as I possibly can. One of my favorites is the largest Pop’r made, and it’s called a P70. They are kind of hard to find, but this bait will actually “walk the dog” in and around all the cover that you’re pitching it in shallow water. Be ready, have plenty of good sharp hooks, a good medium tipped action rod to fight these fish with and I think you’ll find that the top water fishing, both large and smallmouth is the most exciting fishing we have.By: Walker Agency
