Baker Recalls Granite Shoals Before LBJ

Newcomers to fishing on the Highland Chain may call it Lake LBJ, but to those of us that remember “Granite Shoals” when it was, some 30 years ago,  this lake’s original name will always stick with us.

Doug Baker had one of those old fashioned days while boating the best 5 fish limit of the weekend. Doug reported an all day bite, while he put together a limit weighing 13.31 lbs to cash a first place check. His primary weapon was a “reddish crawfish crankbait” fished across mid and lower end lake points. While we’re on the subject of the Baker’s expertise and the quality of fishing, we should also mention that Largemouth weren’t the only species of bass brought to the scales.

Spotted Bass and the most Smallmouth that C.A.S.T. has weighed on this lake in several years also came across the scales with a 2.4 pound brownie leading the class.

Who says that there are no smallmouth left in this Colorado chain?

Ricky Roberts and Janet Frerich gave Baker a run for first place weighing in a total of 11.39 lbs.

Betty Brown’s personal best largemouth, a 5.29 lbs, took the overall big bass division. Her fish hit a blue Oldham’s spinnerbait along a boat dock right against a seawall in 1 foot of water.

Most anglers reported having the most success throwing wacky rigged Crème Lure’s Scoundrel worms in grasshopper, natural and watermelon colors. However, right at daylight there was some limited topwater action, like the 4.87 lb. largemouth that tried to demolish Lester Coldewey’s Zara Spook and several fish taken on 1/8 and 1/4 oz. Terminator “Tiny T” buzzbaits. Love that topwater bite! It’s safe to say the post-spawn blues are over.
