Bass Fishing League Regional Championship Taking Place On Kentucky Lake

The Bass Fishing League is headed to Kentucky Lake Oct. 21-23 for a regional championship featuring the best anglers from the BFL’s Buckeye, Hoosier, Michigan and Great Lakes divisions.

“We need a change in the weather,” said FLW Tour pro Dan Morehead of Paducah, Ky., who has four wins and five top 10 FLW wins on the lake. “We need something, a front, some cloud cover, something besides these bright bluebird skies to help improve the bite.

“The fishing shouldn’t be so tough next week,” added Morehead. “There has been an awful lot of pressure on the lake, but it is getting better and the fishing should improve. The fish are starting to move shallow, in some cases too shallow for a trolling motor. Powerbaits, topwater baits, crankbaits and Rat-L-Traps will all play a part. It’s probably going to take 15 to 17 pounds of fish per day to win. Anglers are going to have to cover a lot of water and if the fish aren’t biting, they need to move on.”

Takeoff and weigh-ins will be at Kentucky Dam Marina located at 446 Marina Drive in Gilbertsville, Ky. Take offs will begin at 7 a.m. each morning and weigh-ins will start at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Kentucky Lake BFL Regional tournament is being hosted by the Marshall County Tourist Commission.

The Top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on point standings from their respective divisions qualified for the regional championship where boaters are competing for a top award of a Ranger 198VX with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard and a Chevy Pick-up, while co-anglers are fishing for a new Ranger 198VX with a 200-horsepower outboard.

The full field will compete the first two days of competition and the top 12 boaters and top 12 co-anglers advance to the final day of competition based on accumulated weight. The winners will be determined by the heaviest three-day catch. The top six boaters and top six co-anglers will advance to the BFL All-American presented by Chevy.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
