Corsair Reels From ShimanoRound Design, Smooth Operation, Great Price

The renewed popularity in ’round-designed’ baitcasting reels that Shimano started in the early ’90’s continues with the new Corsair reels, available in two sizes for bass fishing, large freshwater species and light-tackle saltwater action.

“Anglers who have been wanting a moderate-priced round reel with proven Shimano quality can now look to the Corsair reels,” said Chris Scott with Shimano’s product development staff. “From out research and by listening to anglers at sport shows and tournaments, we know that the new Corsair reels will quickly claim a large following.”

Scott mentions that the Corsair reels have been in development for more than three years. “As with all Shimano rods and reels, we took all the necessary steps in the design stage, field-testing and refinements so the reels would showcase out abilities from the start,” Scott said. “The Corsair reels incorporate classic, traditional styling, while utilizing Shimano’s industry-leading manufacturing capabilities so they feature ’90’s technology.”

Two models are available, the Corsair 300 and Corsair 400, both with metal frames, aluminum spools, and a 4.7:1 gear ratio. The reels feature three bearings (two ball bearings) and Shimano’s Super Stopper anti-reverse system with a one direction roller bearing to eliminates handle backplay for solid hook-sets. Additionally, they include Shimano’s Variable Brake System (VBS), a centrifugal braking system that gives anglers control over backlashes while maintaining total freespool. The VBS brake weights can be easily tuned ‘on’ or ‘off’ so the reel can be customized to an angler’s casting ability.

The Corsair 300, primarily for bass and light-tackle saltwater use for species such as redfish and sea trout, is capable of handling 240 yards of 12 pound test line and up to 120 yards to 20 pound test. It weighs 10.4-ounces.

Offered with a clicker, the Corsair 400 is an ideal size for northern pike, muskie and in-shore saltwater species such as striped bass and bluefish. It hlds 330 yards of 12-pound test up to 160 yards of 20-pounds, and weighs 10.9 ounces.
