With the warm weather Northwest Indiana has been experiencing, expectations were very high for the second tournament of the year. With temperatures in the 80’s and water temps between 63-66, most anglers thought that it would take a large limit to win.
But as usual, it was not that easy come tournament day. Of the 15 teams entered, only 7 teams brought fish to the scales. The winning team of Brett Davis and Brian Goddard caught a limit of bass weighing 8.27 pounds. They were sight fishing for visible bass. They also managed to capture big bass honors with a nice 2.8 pound smallmouth.
Fishing alone and finishing in second place was Mark Noell. He caught a limit of bass weighing 8.04 pounds.
With a limit of bass consisting mostly of smallmouth bass, the team of Andy Mills and Mike Mak finished third with 7.53 pounds. Working rock and wood payed off nicely for them.
Rounding out the top five teams, Jeff Denton and Chris Schultz managed 3 bass weighing 4.09 to finish 4th. Pitching soft plastics and jigs brought in enough fish for them to take the lead in the Angler of the Year standings with 196 points.
Finishing in 5th with one bass weighing 1.74 pounds was the team of Dale and Von Fowler. That very important bass put them into second place for Angler of the Year with 193 points.
15 teams brought in just 21 bass for 32.99 pounds of bass. Rest assured, that will change later this month when the 3rd tournament of the year launches out of the Grand Kankakee Marsh on May 30th.
