As the third tournament of the year got under way, the anglers found conditions to be less than favorable. The area had received good amounts of rain a week before that left the river muddy. A cold front passed through the day before and heavy thunderstorms were predicted before weigh-in made the fishing very tough.
Only during tournament day will you find the predicted bad weather to be spot on. One hour before weigh-in the storm hit which left the teams scrambling for cover. Lightning, high winds and heavy rain rolled through the area and pretty much ended the fishing for the day.
The team of Jeff Denton and Chris Schultz stepped up to the scales and set the mark of a five fish limit weighing 7.35 pounds. Their catch would hold up through the weigh-in to take first place. Fishing soft plastics slow was the ticket for them. With their first place finish, Denton and Schultz take a commanding lead in the Angler of the Year race.
The team of Brett Davis and Brian Goddard brought in a 5 fish limit weighing 7.06 pounds. Their bag also included the day’s big bass with a largemouth weighing 2.82 pounds. Davis and Goddard narrowly missed becoming two time winners this year having won the last event.
The father and son team of Joe and Matt Quick brought in 4 fish weighing 5.96 pounds to finish in third.
Finishing out the top 5 were the teams of Danny Fowler and Kevin Rainford with 4 bass weighing 4.79 pounds for 4th place and Mark Noell fishing alone with 3 bass weighing 4.23 pounds.
The next event will be launched out of the Shelby ramp on June 13th. Fishing has not been as good as it normally is. With the right weather, the river will get back to it’s normal self and the fishing will be much better. The KRTC staff would like to thank all the teams fishing this year. Turnout has been fantastic and is only going to get better.
