Lake Barkley To Host Bass Fishing League Regional Championship

The Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Barkley Oct. 7-9 for a regional championship featuring the best anglers from the BFL’s Mississippi, Illini, Choo Choo and Mountain divisions.

“It’s been kind of a crazy year on Barkley,” said FLW Tour pro Dan Morehead of Paducah, Ky. “Even though we’ve had some cool temperatures, the fish are still in transition. If we get some fronts to come through and clouds and wind they should catch them pretty decent.

“The lakes are really clear right now, so it won’t take 20 to 25 pounds to win,” Morehead added. “It’s typical fall fishing. If I were fishing Barkley, I would definitely look for a topwater bite. There will be a shallow wood and rock pattern, so there will be some flipping. There might be a dock pattern going on depending on the water level. I just wouldn’t look to catch them deep.”

Takeoffs will be at Kuttawa/Lyon County Boat Ramp. Takeoff is scheduled for 7 a.m. each day while weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. daily at the Old Kuttawa Recreation Area. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Lake Barkley event is hosted by the Lake Barkley Tourism Commission.

The top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on point standings from their respective divisions qualified for the regional championship where boaters are competing for a top award of a Ranger 198VX with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard and a Chevy pick-up, while co-anglers are fishing for a new Ranger 198VX.

The full field will compete the first two days of competition and the top 12 boaters and top 12 co-anglers advance to the final day of competition based on accumulated weight. The winners will be determined by the heaviest three-day catch. The top six boaters and top six co-anglers will advance to the BFL All-American presented by Chevy.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the FLW American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
