Friends of Lake Eufaula, with support from the Alabama Department of Freshwater Fisheries, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and the City of Eufaula, will be sponsoring a unique bass tournament on Lake Eufaula, Saturday, July 27, at Lakepoint State Park.
According to F.O.L.E. President Dennis Fineout, the tournament will consist of two-man teams, and that each team can weigh-in up to 20 spotted bass of any size. The payout, which includes a big fish prize, will be 100% of very modest entry fees, which is intended to allow greater participation in the event. F.O.L.E. fisheries advocate Rick Sacco noted that spotted bass, while native to the Chattahoochee drainage, were not commonly encountered in the middle and lower portions of the reservoir for three decades after the lake was impounded. Since then, they have increased both in numbers and distribution and now are commonly caught by anglers throughout the lake. Sacco added that spotted bass may be in competition with largemouth bass and crappie for the lake’s primary forage, threadfin shad.
“Folks don’t drive from Indiana to Lake Eufaula in March to fish for spotted bass. Spotted bass which are weighed-in by the tournament competitors will be held on ice and used to gather valuable age and growth data for the spotted bass population. Biologists from Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries and Georgia Department of Natural Resources will be removing otoliths from the fish collected. Otoliths are calcified structures found underneath a fish’s brain. Otoliths can be used to age fish since annual growth rings can be observed under a microscope, similar to the rings observed on a tree stump.
Spotted bass are usually more difficult to collect than largemouth bass by standardized electrofishing, so biologists from both state agencies are very interested in obtaining this data. In addition to providing this much needed data, anglers will also be part of managing for better quality largemouth bass fishing by harvesting spotted bass.
At the conclusion of the tournament, F.O.L.E. will host an angler education forum and a fish fry for all tournament competitors, their families, and members of F.O.L.E.
