Local Big Dogs” Chris McCall & Pete Shivers Win

Anglers Quest 2007 Super Team Series Championship is now in the books, and the Super Team Series is complete for 2007. The event began on Friday evening with the presentation of the special Trophies to the “2007 Anglers of the Year”, Chris McCall & Pete Shivers, they will receive paid entries to all A/Q Super Team Series Events in 2008. The Calcutta Auction pot was started out by Mike Hudson, owner of Antex Roofing in Houston Texas by bidding $240 per team on the entire field, starting the pot at a kool $5000.The Calcutta Auction followed and sold teams from $245 to $910 and raised $6805.00 to add to the anglers pot.

The weather was clear with 70’s at daybreak to 80’s during the day with a slight southeast breeze for both days of the event, which was held at Sam Rayburn from Mill Creek Park. As Day 1 got underway with the 21 qualified teams taking off into the dim morning light after the playing of the National Anthem at 6:50 am.

The anglers were all going for the $16,555.00 purse which was the payback at this Championship. The water was in good shape and was at approximately 1/4 ft above normal pool. The 21 teams brought in 7 limits of bass, 63 fish that totaled 156.66 lbs with a 2.48 avg. Day 2 produced 9 limits 73 fish 184.95 lbs and a 2.53 avg weight. After both days were complete there were 136 total bass caught with 16 limits 341.61 lbs and a 2.51 overall average weight.

The second biggest stringer to come to the scales on day 1 at 16.42 lbs was from the local big dogs team of Chris McCall from Jasper and Pete Shivers from Kirbyville, Tx. Chris & Pete brought in another limit on day 2 at 13.69 lbs to give them a 2 day total of 30.11 lbs to win the event. They ran Chris’s A&W wrapped Ranger/Evinrude bass rig to numerous areas all over the lake. They reported catching all their bass flippin 3 different baits in 8′-11′ grass beds using American Rodsmiths rods with Abu Garcia Revo reels and Stren 60-80 lb super braid line. They reported using 1 oz Santone jigs, 3/4 oz screw lock Gambler ugly otters and 10″ Gambler worms. Mr Mike Taylor, owner of The Stump Restaurant & Club, purchased this team in the Calcutta auction for $910 and received a $2380.00 payday for his investment. Chris & Pete graciously accepted the Anglers Quest 1st place “Goal Posts” and $5000.00.

Larry Cotten from Huffman & Clint May from LaPorte, Tx started the event by purchasing their team in the Calcutta auction for $405. On day 1 they ran Larry’s Skeeter/Evinrude to mid and north lake areas with ridges and grass to bring in a limit that tipped the scales at 9.68 lbs. They brought in a great limit of bass on day 2 at 19.96 lbs to give them a 2-day total of 29.64 lbs and the 2nd place check of $1330.00 and an additional Calcutta check for $1700.00. Larry & Clint also had the 2nd big bass of the event in their bag at 7.75 lbs and collected an additional $380.00 for that bite giving them a championship paycheck of $3410.00. Greg Crawford from Huffman & Sammy Smith from Channelview, Tx run Greg’s Champion/Mercury rig to areas in Ayish Bayou to bring in the heaviest 5 bass limit on day 1 at 19.49 lbs which they reported catching on rattle traps and top water ribbits. Greg & Sammy slipped on day 2 bringing only 4 bass at 7.94 lbs to finish in 3rd place and collect $2500.00 for their days on the water. Lindy Hadley from Brookeland & Willie King from Jasper, Tx captured 4th place. Lindy & Willie weighed in a total of 10 bass at 22.95 lbs to capture the 4th place check of $1780.00. Ken Cook from DeQuincy, La & Bob Vote from Kingwood, Tx finished in 5th place with 7 bass that tipped the scales over both days at 22.70 lbs. They also had the Big Bass of the event at a fine 8.71 lber, for their efforts they collected $1140.00.

Anglers Quest 2007 Schedules are available online at www.anglers-quest.com. The next event will be the Tuesday Series Team event on Lake Houston, July 3, and then July 4, the Wednesday Series Team event on Lake Conroe. These events take off at 6 pm and weigh in at 9:15 pm.
