Scott Von Strohe & Janet Freerich  Pull Off Close Victory on Lake Mathis

The competition was though and so was the fishing on Lake Mathis . Located about 30 miles south of Choke Canyon , this lake is often over looked by bass fisherman , mainly because of the lake level fluctuation in the past . But for the past couple of years the lake has maintained a constant level allowing for a good spawn , along with a generous stocking of bass by the TP&W . This lake is full of 10 to 13 inch fish . In a couple years from now Mathis will be full of 2 to 5 pound fish which will make this a great bass factory .

The predictions of 15 to 18 pound limits to take first place were floating around the rafted boats waiting for the early morning take off . But the East wind and a score of jet skiers and pleasure boaters changed all that . As with most south Texas lakes , when the wind blows from the East the fish bite the least . That and the churned up muddy water caused by all the recreation made for tough fishing .

That became very apparent at 3 O’clock weigh-in . In talking with others as well as my wife and I catching fish wasn’t the problem . Finding keeper sized fish was . Very few limits of fish went across the scales . Topping the list was the team of Scott Von Strohe & Janet Freerish with a nice limit weighing in at 11.29 pounds . Followed close behind by Ron Carter & Debbie Hunter with 10.29 pounds . Next came David Cole & Ginger Reynolds at 10.21 pounds . 4th place went to Robert & Mary Ellen Dunlap with 9.28 pounds . 5th place was Ted & Kim Sprencil with 8.78 pounds . 6th place was the team of Steve & Karen Nixon weighing in 6.47 pounds . The rest of the teams struggled to bring in one or two fish to the scales . Ladies Big Bass went to Barbara Gravatt with a nice fish weighing 3.38 pounds . Men’s Big Bass went to Dave Lane at 3.06 pounds .
