Taylor Made Systems recently previewed its new self-cleaning glass technology for the marine industry.
“This is a major breakthrough in marine glass technology,” said Mike Oathout, vice president, sales and marketing, for Taylor Made Systems. “We are continuing to test and fine-tune the technology, and we plan to incorporate the self-cleaning process into a variety of new glass products during the next 12 months.”
The self-cleaning glass is impregnated with special chemicals during the manufacturing process. These photocatalytic chemicals, which are activated by the sunโs ultraviolet rays, cause organic dirt to break down its adherence to the glass surface. At the same time, the integrated coating reduces the surface tension of water on the glass surface, causing it to “sheet” instead of forming separate droplets. Thus, the loosened dirt is easily washed off the glass surface by rain or spray.
