With spring getting into full swing around the end of March in Northeast Texas, the KCKL 95.9 FM Big Bass Tournament will celebrate it’s 20th Anniversary and once again bring some of that good ole Texas Family Fun to the shores of Cedar Creek Lake. What more could anyone ask for than a great weekend at the lake with family, friends, fishing, $5,000 1st Prize and a chance to win a 2003 Chevrolet truck from Teague Chevrolet. Even if you dont win the Grand Prize, anglers have a great chance to win one of over 150 other cash Prizes in the Hourly, Overall, Womens and Youth Divisions. On Saturday afternoon theres even a BBQ and over 50 Door Prizes after each days final weigh in. The KCKL Big Bass Tournament has definitely become a Texas Tradition among bass anglers. Most of the KCKL anglers have competed in the Tournament for many years and quite a few will be celebrating their 20th year of participation with the event.
This years Tournament will return to its original location, Bonner’s Sunny Glen RV Park & Marina. It all started when Fred & Mike McBurney and Radio Station KCKL 95.9 FM owner Ed Routt decided it would be a good idea to have a family-fishing event. Carrying on the tradition which started some 20 years ago, Tournament Director Mike McBurney, along with a dedicated crew of friends and family, will once again present the KCKL 95.9 FM Big Bass Tournament …… a Texas family tradition.
Another big part of the KCKL Big Bass Tournament tradition is Radio Station General Manager, Pat Isaacson. Pat and most of the Tournament Staff have been involved with the event since its beginning. All told, Mike, Pat and the Staff have a total of over 150 years KCKL Tournament experience. Since its beginning, Pat and the Radio Station have supported the Tournament with the hourly broadcasts of weights, along with promoting the event, and handling many of the details of an event which attracts over 1,000 anglers each year.
The KCKL Big Bass Tournament over the years has produced some pretty impressive winning catches. There have been four bass going over 11 pounds, and one over 12 and one that holds the Tournament record at 13.30 lbs. Two of the bass from the Tournament have joined the Parks and Wildlife “Share A Lunker Program”. In several of the Tournaments, it has taken a six pounder just to break into the Top 50. In the 1999 Tournament, there were 101 bass over 5 lbs. weighed in. Take a look at the “Past Tournaments” web pages for the full story.
