Oct. 8 program to highlight $330,000 king mackerel tournament
Tune in Sunday, Oct. 8 to “FLW Outdoors” on FSN for the $330,000 Wal-Mart FLW Kingfish Tour event held in Beaufort, S.C. The third event of the $1.82 million FLW Kingfish Tour concludes with the winning team claiming a cash prize of $70,000.
The “FLW Outdoors” saltwater series is a reality-format show told from the anglers’ perspective. Each week the top-five finalists are followed from takeoff to weigh-in, allowing the audience to feel the anglers’ nerves, listen to their strategy and learn from their mistakes. The stories evolve and the suspense grows throughout the one-hour show until the final weigh-in results are announced.
FLW Kingfish Tour tournaments are three-day events. The entire field competes on day one and day two, and the top five teams compete on day three. The winning team is determined based on the heaviest kingfish from day one or day two plus the heaviest kingfish from day three.
Team Hard Way, captained by Todd Korker of Jupiter, Fla., got a big surprise on day one when a large fish mauled their prop-wash Spanish mackerel at about 10:30 a.m. Initially the team thought they had hooked a shark, but after a 15-minute struggle, a 44-pound, 15-ounce kingfish surfaced. That fish placed Hard Way firmly in the lead heading into the final round of competition. The team captured the king mackerel 29 miles from the Port Royal Inlet, about eight miles off the beach. With nearly a 7-pound lead, Hard Way starts the final day fishing conservatively and then transitions into hog-hunt mode once they land their first kingfish.
Team Salty Dog, captained by Jeff Osborne of St. Augustine, Fla., heads into the final day in second place with a kingfish weighing 38 pounds, 3 ounces. Using simple observation more than strategy, the team caught their opening-round kingfish by spotting a frenzied group of seagulls about 30 miles from shore. Moving in for a closer look, they noticed a pod of Spanish mackerel schooling on minnows. Knowing that kingfish love to feast on Spanish mackerels, Salty Dog decided to deep-troll the area with downriggers and ribbonfish. In addition to their weigh-fish, Salty Dog also hooked up an even larger kingfish.
Unfortunately, it was destroyed by a 10-foot hammerhead shark.
FSN also follows Team Cat Daddy, the only team in the top five that has recorded a previous FLW Kingfish Tour victory. The team, captained by Danny Mathis of Gonzales, La., sits in third place with a kingfish weighing 36 pounds, 8 ounces. Watch as Mathis puts his 17 years of experience to work as he contends for his second Kingfish Tour win.
