For a change at our summer CAST Tournament, Lake Fork gave up good numbers of fish under the 16-inch slot, yet not one went over the slot at 24 inches. Most of our couples caught fish, however, none of the couples could pinpoint when the fish were biting. For example, I was told that the bite was over at 8:00 am and that you had better have had your fish by then or you would not catch any. Steve Heck told me that they did not have a fish at noon, but they managed to bring in a limit at 2:00 pm. Others said they caught fish all day. So after questioning a majority of our couples, I concluded that the bass responded to a variety of baits at a variety of times with fish being caught on top waters, crank baits, and Carolina rigged worms all the way to 30 feet deep.
Guy and Rose Cavazos of Dallas won the tournament and culled to a five bass limit that went 7.68 lbs. Guy said that it was one of those days where everything just went right. Where ever they went and what ever they threw, they caught fish. They received $750.00 for first place with their seven pounds of fish.
Jack and Becky Staton, who have been fishing with CAST for over 15 years, came in second with a 5 fish limit weighing 5.70 lbs. They won $440.00 for their effort.
Rounding out the top six teams were Wiley & Martha Collins with 5.25 lbs; Allen & Robin Little with 5.14 lbs; Larry & Carol McMinimy with 5.30 lbs; Randy & Leta Bunch with 4.74 lbs.
The big bass of the tournament was caught by Wiley & Martha Collins and weighed in at 2.51 lbs.
On A Personal Note
Lake Fork completed the C.A.S.T. Northeast Region’s 18th year of holding qualifying tournaments. It was a personal milestone in that it was tournament number 125 for Barbara and me as CAST Directors. We want to thank each and every couple from the bottom of our hearts that have fished with us over the last 18 years as we look forward to another 125 tournaments–maybe by then I can learn to catch fish.
C.A.S.T./Northeast would like to thank all of our sponsors for their help in making these tournaments possible.
