Ashland Resident Wins $5,000 Playing Fantasy Fishing

Rick Whitt of Ashland, Kentucky, accumulated the most points of any Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Fantasy Fishing player worldwide to win $5,000 after last week’s FLW Tour event at Beaver Lake presented by General Tire in Rogers, Arkansas. Whitt won by assembling a team of anglers and earning points based on their performance in the FLW Tour fishing tournament.

“As a tournament-angler myself, I think this was probably the easiest victory I’ve ever had,” said Whitt. “I used the FLW website to see who had momentum heading into this event, put together my team, and with a little luck I won it all.

“I chose Bryan Thrift, because momentum-wise, he’s a no-brainer,” Whitt continued. “I also picked Cody Meyer because I figured Beaver Lake would be fishing tough, and he’s a finesse guy. I took John Cox, a couple of others, and ended up picking four of the top-10 finishers.”

Whitt said he hopes he can rack up enough points to win the $10,000 grand prize, which is awarded to the top player overall at the end of the 2017 tournament season.

“I’ve been playing FLW Fantasy Fishing since 2014 and that’s what I’m shooting for,” said Whitt.

Finishing in second place was John Deak of Phillipsburg, Ohio, who took home $1,000, and in third place was Michael Brown of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, who won $500.

Another contingent of winners from across the globe was awarded prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.

The 2017 Fantasy Fishing season consists of eight tournaments surrounding the FLW Tour regular season including the season-ending Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. Fans compete for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the seven tournaments and a top prize of $5,000. The cumulative grand prize for the highest ranked player at the end of the season is $10,000.
