C.A.S.T. 2002 Anglers of the Year Win 1st Tournament of 2003

Our dedicated couples faced extremely windy conditions at Coleto Creek in C.A.S.T. South’s first tournament. Picking up where they left off, the 2002 Anglers of the Year, Ken Staats & Shirleen Frederiksen, won first place. They weighed in 5 bass that had a total weight of 13.65 lbs. Their $400 stringer was anchored with a 7.20 lb beauty. Ken said that most of their fish were caught using Rattletraps in 7 to 10 feet of water.

A brand new couple to our C.A.S.T. region, Rick & Frankie Dunlap, took 2nd place. They also had a limit of fish that weighed in at 10.40 lbs. Third place went to David & Penny Herzog another new couple, with a weight of 10.15 lbs. Lori Monney won women’s big bass with a weight of 3.55 lbs.

Rounding out the top six teams were Ricky Roberts & Janet Frerich with 9.70 lbs, Taylor & Kimberly Crenshaw with 4.00 lbs, and Bill & Connie Bales with 3.75 lbs.

On a sad note. A local fisherman fell out of his boat and drowned on the Saturday before our tournament. He was not wearing a life jacket or using a kill switch. Please remember to wear yours and to make your partner also do so. It could save a life.

C.A.S.T./South would like to thank all of our sponsors for their help in making these tournaments possible. Ranger Boats, Mercury Outboards, Continental Batteries, Eagle Claw, Mr. Twister, Mepps Lures, J-Ann Awards, Lucky Craft Co., Fishingworld.com, West TexasTwister Rods, Luxor Custom Jewelers, Ad Mart, Kraft Foods, ProRule, Lufkin Chamber of Commerce, T&C Tackle, Back Country Creations, Travis Boating Center, Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits, and all the great couples of the C.A.S.T. South region who donated door prizes.

Our next tournament is at Lake Amistad on March 16th. We plan to have our usual BarBQ on the Saturday night prior. An email will be sent to all our couples as to the location and time. Hope to see you there.By: Stan and Mary Hall / CAST
