Ferguson’s overcome gale force winds to win Cedar Creek

What began as a morning with only a light breeze soon turns into a day with gale force winds. With three and four foot swells hindering the couples in getting to their hot spots, most had to settle for a plan “B” in which they fished any where that they could get to. Or, as the old saying goes, “any port in a storm”.

For Bill and Janice Ferguson of Rowlett, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise. By having to stay in one general area they concentrated on a grass bed in the back of a small cut. Bill said that they not only fished the outside of the grass bed as most anglers do but also just pushed their boat into the middle of it and fished every part of it. Their entire limit of bass that weighed in at 19.70 pounds was caught on a chartreuse lizard in the grass in less than 3 feet of water. The water was almost chocolate color because of the constant wind churning up the sentiment. For their perseverance they won first place and had the second largest bass of the tournament. They took home a check for $1,038.00.

Liz and Larry Petr of Dallas won second place with a five fish limit going 17.25 pounds. Unlike the Ferguson’s, they used a white spinner bait to land all of their fish. But like the Ferguson’s their fish also came in less than 3 feet of water.

Third was taken by Diane & Rayford Ritchman of Scurry, with another limit going 15.99 pound. Again, they said that very shallow water was the key.

Big Bass of the tournament was landed on a Slug-go type lure and the skillful angler was Lori Holden of Ft. Worth with 7.65 lbs. Yes, once again a women fishing from the back of the boat in used water landed the best fish of the tournament. All I can say is that they are sure lucky to have us men as their guides. Maybe, we are a little lucky too, to have them as our partners.

Rounding out the top six finishers are Patti and R.D. Campbell of Waxahachie with 14.46 lbs.; Margaret and Ronnie Sherbert of Ft. Worth with 13.83 lbs.; Lori and Keith Holden of Ft. Worth with 13.10 lbs.
