Fishing For the Cure

Casting the red trap with pinpoint accuracy then clicking the retrieve for a steady, but bumpy return through submerged timber, Guy suddenly felt the “thump” of a hit and immediately arched his rod for the hook-set. This was to become a battle of skill vs. nature, a skirmish that he was well familiar with.

Guy Adams, an outdoor guide since 1978, has lead the way into his realm of hunting and fishing experiences by sharing the many adventures he has long enjoyed with others.

But after losing family and friends to cancer, Guy joined forces with the Gateway for Cancer Research foundation, a funding agency that provides research money focused on immediate and meaningful studies to find the cure of Cancer. Initiating his “Fishing for the Cure” fishing team, Guy, who often switches from Redfish tours on the coast to freshwater Bass tournaments within the lakes and rivers, can now be seen launching his unique “Gateway Cancer Research logos wrapped around his colorful Dodge pick-up trailering his just as colorful Ranger boat with Yamaha outboard.

Fishing and competing with the major national bass circuits such as BASSMasters and FLW, on legendary bass fishing Lakes such as Amistad, Toledo Bend, Texoma, and Sam Rayburn, Guy Adams was here in March of ’09 to compete at the Texas Stren event as a Pro/Boater on Lake Sam Rayburn, where he also assisted with the newly formed FLW College Tour.

“My fishing and guiding career was shocked into a non-priority status in 1994, Guy reviewed, after finding out that my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Then when she died in 1998 my very soul was struck a heavy blow by her passing. It was then, Guy declared, that I saw a great need to honor my moms memory by using the passion and skills that she passed on to me to serve the needs for cancer research in hopes of ending such tragedies that others may suffer from this hideous disease.”

A long time pioneer for the great outdoors and professional fishing, Guy Adams was a natural for pioneering the needs of “Gateway for Cancer” and chose a promotional path of focusing attention to its financial needs for research.

As Guy fought the battle of skill -vs.- nature with rod bending from the frenzied activities of the hooked bass, he explained about his main reason for choosing Gateway was that they use 99 cents out of every donated dollar for cancer research. And he found that to be appealing and worthy of his moms memory. “I am totally dedicated to their cause now, he informed, and will do my best to help them raise those funds necessary to find the cure for cancer.

Landing the now subdued bass, Guy admires the natural beauty of an estimated 8 lb specimen, then with a gleam in his eye he releases the fish to live another day. “Fishing for the Cure”, Guy explained to me, is kind of like releasing this fish, so that we can give a brighter outlook to those who’ve suffered as well as a future for those who won’t have to. These are my goals, Guy finalized, to rally for the cause and “Fish for the Cure!”
