Guntersville Lake National Championship

The 2010 Fishers Of Men Legacy Series Guntersville Lake National Championship came to a close today as competitors brought in 544 bass, weighing 1564.69 lbs which included 56, 5-fish limits. In 2 days of sweltering heat, 1116 fish crossed the scales at 3134.29 lbs with a total of 120 5-fish limits.

We want to congratulate Louisiana North Central teammates, Blake Shelby and Tanner Wyatt, who sealed their victory by bringing in 20.10 lbs for a two day total of 40.59 lbs. The new Legacy Series National Champions earned a brand new Triton TR-18 SE powered by a 150hp Mercury Optimax, championship plaques, and a share of Bonus Bucks.

With hardly any experience on Lake Guntersville, Blake explained that he had found an underwater hump near Siebold Creek with his dephfinder during practice that reached to within 13 feet of the surface,. Blake and his nephew, Tanner, noticed that schools of larger fish would move up to feed amid the submerged grass and could be caught with a Chartreuse/Blue back, Series 6XD Strike King Deep Diver. By staying on the hump and plowing up the bottom with their baits, Blake and Tanner netted more than 20 lbs each day. For some reason the fish moved up to feed late on Day 1 while the duo had caught a limit within 30 minutes of their arrival on Day 2.

Tennessee East Legacy members, Brent Butler and Tyler McFall moved up from 5th to finish in 2nd place with 37.05 lbs. Brent and Tyler hauled in 19.43 lbs to go with Day One’s 17.62. Today’s limit also included a 6.50 lbs kicker. Brent and Tyler traveled up to the Comer Bridge area and worked the the shallow side of several main channel islands. Their bass came out of grass filled water six feet or less and fell for skirted frogs and Jeff Weber’s custom swim jigs. Brent wanted to thank his sponsors: John Miles, for his custom built ?Grass Rods?, Tennessee Metal Products, Cotton Port Landing, and Rocky Flats Band.

With today’s 20.11 lbs, South Carolina Upstate teammates, Brent and Hunter Riley, vaulted all the way from 17th up to 3rd overall with a tournament total of 36.74 lbs. Brent and Hunter worked deep water ledges with watermelon-red flake brush hogs till 10:00 am, then run up to the Goose Pond area and flip one ounce, green pumpkin and watermelon candy, Paca Craws in productive grass mats that were located during practice.

Georgia North teammates, Robbie and Coltan Sowash, landed 20.01 lbs today which enabled them to move up from 14th and tie for 3rd place, with 36.74 lbs. Robbie and Colton utilized a Norman DB-22, brown jigs tipped with grn-pumpkin Super Chunks, and the Strike King Series 6XD in 12 to 18 feet of water in Browns Creek and the main channel up to the 431 bridge.

Georgia South anglers, Jerry Tice and Seth Pemberton captured 5th place with 35.40 lbs. While sitting in 29th place on Day One Jerry and Seth netted 20.31 today which included a 6.91 kicker fish.

The Day 2, 1st Big Fish award went to Alabama South Legacy partners, Kevin Diamond and Nathan Burkett for their 8.40 lbs largemouth. The behemoth chomped down on a texas-rigged, watermelon color, 10 inch ole monster worm under the grass mats, in 12 ft of water, near the mouth of Siebold Creek.

Ninth place finishers, Gary Rogers and Wesley Minors, Alabama Northeast, enticed a 7.62 lbs bucketmouth with a Strike King Sexy Spoon, to earn the Day 2, Second Big Fish Award.
