Hard Jerk Baitâ¦Works In Early Spring

Hi, this is Terry Baksay, Team Yamaha Pro. My favorite way to catch fish is throwing a hard jerk bait, early in the spring is the best time to fish a hard jerk bait. The fish like the bait that’ll suspend in front of their faces, early in the season, and you just throw it out there, jerk it a couple of times, and let it sit in front of their face. And that usually will trigger the fish to go eat it. Out of the bright colored baits like the Husky baits that Normar makes, Fire Tiger, and Clown are really really good springtime baits, especially for small mouth.

What you want to do is look for staging areas which are outside of the spawning areas, and try to find the fish in 15-20 feet of water. A lot of the small mouth will suspend because early in the spring, especially in the Northern lakes, they feed on perch. And that’s why the bright colors are as good as they are. But when what you’re doing is you’re just jerking the bait down there, letting it suspend in front of the fish and catching really as many fish as you want.

Use light line 8 or 10 pound test, and I like to throw it on the spinning rod so I can make long casts. Especially when it’s windy. And the windier the day, the better it is.By: Walker Agency
