One-hour show covers National Guard FLW College Fishing tournament on Kentucky Lake
The National Guard FLW College Fishing Central Regional Championship took place on the famed waters of Kentucky Lake in Murray, Ky. Indiana University students Dustin Vaal and Jesse Schultz started the three-day tournament by targeting schooling bass, a popular fall technique on Kentucky Lake. But they quickly learned schoolers can be feast or famine.
On day one they managed only 4 pounds and knew they needed to alter their game plan. Vaal and Schultz made a big change on day two when they ran to a riprap bank that surrounds a neck-down. With water being constantly released at the Kentucky Dam thanks to recent rainfall, heavy current was funneling through the neck-down, creating a classic ambush point for hungry fall bass. Vaal and Schultz described the area as magic and it was. Using primarily a 3/8-ounce spinnerbait, the Indiana teammates combined for a total of 13 bass weighing 29 pounds, 14 ounces.
For their efforts, the Hoosiers won a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard wrapped in school colors and $25,000 for Indiana University.
Rounding out the top five teams were Eastern Kentucky University – Richard Cobb V and Tyler Moberly (12 bass, 25-12, $25,000); Ohio State University – Casey Hammann and Kevin Moeller (eight bass, 22-11, $11,000); Southern Illinois University – Richard Dunham and Travis Gould (10 bass, 20-3, $8,000); and host school Murray State University – Steve Miller and Kalem Tippett (eight bass, 17-0, $6,000). Each of the top five teams qualified for the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship, which will be held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., April 10-12, 2010.
