The Couples in the C.A.S.T./North division are a tournament directors dream. The tournament that could have been a total disaster didn’t faze our couples in the least. They launched their boats from a “make do” rock shelf ramp built by the West Central Texas Water Board because the lake is approximately 17 feet low and all the other ramps are out of the water. They parked their vehicles, with trailers attached, among the boulders, rocks and ditches, off a caliche road and made their way through the dried west Texas grass to wait their turn to be picked up on the boat ramp. The banks were only rock with no place to beach a boat so we had to launch a boat, then a waiting boat would scoot up on the ramp to pick up a partner, then launch another boat, then pick up another partner. All of this without one complaint and everything going like clockwork.
Even though the lake is so low, there is still a large amount of clear deep water to fish, just don’t cut corners and watch for the many islands that pop upout of nowhere.
The bass seemed to prefer small white poping baits early, moving on to Berkley Blue Fleck Power Worms during the heat of the day, and were only coming in 2 sizes. The “Oh my gosh get the net” size and the smaller “Do you have a note from you mother” size.
Don and Dixie Rodgers almost didn’t net their “Big Bass of the Tournament”. The bass knocked Don’s Berkley Blue Fleck Power Worm up the line and headed for a tree. Dixie was on the spot with the net, but when Don told her that it was gone she went back to her chair, only to hear “he’s still here”. Dixie grabbed the net and in one swift swoop boated a 7.90 Lb HAWG at 12:20 P.M.
There is nothing better for catching bass than a bait from a sponsor, just askBobby and Tammy Hodges. Bobby was fishing a crank bait and broke it off just as the morning was starting. He just reached down and grabbed the white Horizon Spinnerbait (generously supplied by our sponsor) laying on the boat deck and on the first cast next to a boat dock hung a 6.80 beauty for “2nd Big Bass of the Tournament”.
James and D’Ann Bone used a white poping bait around boat houses and managed to get a 3 fish stringer anchored by a quality 5.90 pounder to claim heavy stringer of the tournament at 8.80 LBS.
The tournament that had all the potential’s for a disaster went as smooth as could be. Thanks to our couples, a tournament directors dream!
