Maryland Man Wins Marathon International Bonefish Tournament

Gene Ford of Potomac, Md., triumphed for a third time in the Marathon International Bonefish Tournament that ended Sept. 25.

Ford, who has fished the tournament a dozen times, again teamed up with Marathon guide Albert Ponzoa. The pair released 31 fish.

Pat Bennett of Weston, Fla., earned the grand slam award for scoring a grand slam of bonefish, permit, and tarpon. Bennett, who fished with Captain Tim Carlile of Sugarloaf Key, Fla., also earned the biggest bonefish award with a 25-inch fish and landed the tournament?s largest permit at 32.5 inches.

In the ladies’ division, Lynn Goodwin won with seven bonefish. She fished with Captain Chris Morrison. Both are Marathon residents.

Goodwin and Marathon angler Rocky Padgett earned the team grand champion award for releasing 17 fish.

This year’s event attracted 11 anglers who released a total of 88 bonefish.By: Andy Newman/Carol Shaughnessy
