New Mercury OptiMax 200XS

World’s First Low-Emissions Hi-Performance Outboard set to Revolutionize Outboard Sport Boat Market

The new OptiMax 200XS consumer performance outboard

represents a culmination of advanced, direct fuel injection, 2-stroke technology

developed by Mercury Marine. Mercury Racing’s OptiMax 200 earned its ‘XS’

advanced performance designation and entry in the record books after winning the

2000 ’24 Hours of Rouen’ endurance powerboat race in Rouen, France. The 200XS

not only won the race but also set records for the most laps completed (837) and

fastest average speed (129.052 kilometers per hour). OptiMax 200XS outboard

powered boats also finished second and fourth. This record setting performance,

resulting in part by fewer necessary fuel pit stops, proved the extended

operating range and durability of Mercury’s OptiMax 2-cycle direct fuel

injection, low-emissions technology.

Race proven technology includes the new Propulsion Control Module (PCM) 555

processor. The so-called ‘triple nickel’ module allows very precise control of

fuel and spark throughout the engine operating range, providing maximum power,

fuel economy and durability. The PCM 555 enables sport boaters to utilize

Mercury’s new SmartCraft Controller Area Network (CAN) electronic control

system. This revolutionary SmartCraft system integrates propulsion with other

boat operations to optimize boat and engine performance. Real-time,

up-to-the-minute data appears on the SmartCraft SC1000 system monitor.

The PCM 555 processor also operates an electronic oil injection system. The

electronic oil pump ensures that the engine gets adequate lubrication throughout

the rpm range. Engine reliability is enhanced with the Engine Guardian system

that monitors 64 internal functions for early indications of problems that could

lead to engine damage. The compact 2.5 Liter V6 powerhead, designed and

developed by Mercury Racing, spins up to 6500 rpm for maximum horsepower and

overall performance. Sport boaters will also appreciate an improvement in fuel

economy over standard 2-cycle performance outboards along with reduced emissions

levels. The engine exceeds 2006 U.S. EPA and 2004 California Air Resources Board

(C.A.R.B.) emissions standards.

The OptiMax 200XS is available with the 15″ (381 mm) short shaft or 20″ (508 mm)

standard center section. The 20″ center section models are available with a

right-hand rotation 1.87:1 gear ratio Torque Master or Sport Master gearcase.

The 15″ short shaft models feature the heavy-duty offshore swivel/clamp bracket

assembly, single-ram trim cylinder and the 1.87:1 Sport Master gearcase with

either right-hand or left-hand rotation.
