One-hour show covers National Guard FLW College Fishing tournament on Lake Norman
Located just outside of Charlotte, N.C., Davidson College hosted the National Guard FLW College Fishing Northern Regional Championship. Flanking the school is Lake Norman, a Catawba River impoundment that is full of largemouth and spotted bass. To catch these fish, most anglers targeted docks. But not the North Carolina State team of Kevin Beverley and Ben Dziwulski.
Beverley and Dziwulski purposely avoided the docks – believing they were too inconsistent. And in the end, they were right. The final day of the tournament saw overcast skies and the bass had little shade to relate to. This didn’t affect Beverley and Dziwulski, who fished a deep rock quarry located in Knox Creek. Working the edge of the quarry in 20 feet of water, the team employed drop shots with Yamamoto Shad Shape worms.
On day one they caught four bass weighing 6 pounds, 2 ounces. On day two Beverley and Dziwulski improved to five bass weighing 9 pounds, 2 ounces and on the final day they secured a six-bass limit worth 9-6. They finished the event with 15 bass weighing 24 pounds, 10 ounces.
For their efforts, the Wolfpack won a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard wrapped in school colors and $25,000 for North Carolina State University.
Rounding out the top five teams were Virginia Tech – Charlie Machek and Scott Wiley (17 bass, 22-11, $25,000); Hampden-Sydney College – Charles Parrish and Allen Luck (14 bass, 21-10, $11,000); Virginia Tech – Andrew Blevins and Carson Rejzer (14 bass, 21-3, $8,000); and Fairmont State University – Wil Dieffenbauch and Brent Dodrill (12 bass, 18-6, $6,000). Each of the top five teams qualified for the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship, which will be held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., April 10-12, 2010.
