Optimal Trolling Speeds Easy to Achieve With Happy Troller

Even at their lowest throttle, sterndrives and outboards can rarely power a boat at an optimal trolling speed. Many gamefish simply won’t chase and strike at a lure that’s moving too fast. The updated Happy Troller from Davis Instruments slows even large engines when deployed, increases stability when cruising, and now has a 45° setting for added flexibility.

Built to last in fresh and saltwater, the Happy Troller is made from high-quality stainless steel components and hardware, and anodized marine aluminum. It mounts permanently on the anti-cavitation plate in 15 minutes. It comes with a one-year warranty.

To use, anglers simply pull the operating cable, locking the plate down behind the prop. The Happy Troller then disrupts the water flow, slowing the boat, while the engine runs at normal low RPMs.

If the down position moves the boat too slowly due to wind, current or other factors, the 45° setting can be used. It provides increased steerage and better handling, with less throttle.

Returning the Happy Troller to the up position is just as easy with a tug on the cable and a bit of throttle. It then smooths the ride in rough water by reducing porpoising and cavitation, and adding stability, especially in bow-light boats.

Davis Instruments’ large Happy Troller for engines 50 hp-plus, runs $149.99; the small for 20–50 hp motors, $145.99.
