A very late March cold front was blowing through on Sunday morning. The weatherman forecasted dropping temperatures and a north wind steady at 25 mph. Lake Richland/Chambers can be very dangerous in the wind. When I started the tournament, everyone was saying that they hoped that they could catch just one bass on a day like today. I had to agree that the fishing conditions were going to be extremely tough. Then weigh-in started. Several boats pulled up to the dock and let their spouse out of the boat. They were all holding a weigh-bag. I thought, “Thank goodness someone landed a fish.” Then several more boats pulled up to the dock, and then several more and several more after them. They all got out with weigh bags and these bags all were holding limits of fish. I could not believe it. What everyone had predicted as a very bad tournament had turned into one of the best that we have had in several years.
Randy and Leta Bunch of Sachse, TX won first place with a 5 bass limit of 20.05 lbs. They took home $910.00 for their winning effort. Randy said that they could not see the bass on the beds, but that they could see “light spots” in the water. They used a 7-inch Mr. Twister green pumpkin Exude lizard with a 1/16 weight and just made many, many casts to the light spots.
In second place was Ronnie and Margaret Sherbert of Ft. Worth. They also had a 5 fish limit that weighed 19.85 lbs. I just checked last years standing on Richland/Chambers and Ronnie and Margaret were also second last year with 18.95 lbs. Looks like they are getting better each year on the lake, so ya’ll better watch out next year. Third place went to Allen and Robin Little of Garland who were very close with another limit of bass going 19.53 lbs. Rounding out the top six were: Rayford & Diane Richman with 5 bass weighing 18.42 lbs; Larry & Liz Petr with 5 bass weighing 17.54 lbs; Jim & Mary Edwards with 5 bass weighing 16.7 1lbs. It took a whopping 14.21 lbs. just to get a check in this tournament.
Big Bass
The big bass of the tournament weighed 7.68 lbs. was landed by the team of
Paul Merritt and Teresa Powell. Ok, Ok, it was Teresa that caught the winning bass. Paul said that he could see the fish on the bed and fished all day for it making cast after cast. He finally gave up and was starting to leave when Teresa made one cast toward the spot. I guess when you are a good fisherman, uh, a fisherwoman, one cast is all you need.
Second place big bass was caught by our tournament winners Randy and Leta Bunch. It weighed 7.12 lbs.
